Showgrounds Shopping Centre in Clonmel is reporting a bumper year in 2018 with footfall up 11.4% on 2017. This year Showgrounds is planning a fun-filled programme of special events and activities to celebrate its 10th Birthday.
Anchored by Marks & Spencer, Showgrounds opened during the economic downturn in 2009 – the worst possible trading period for retail. Despite this the centre has developed further and now boasts some of the best retail tenants in the region including TK Maxx, Argos, Dealz, Iceland, Eason, Pamela Scott, Name It, Vila, Only and Costa Coffee.
“2018 was a fantastic year for the Showgrounds with record footfall figures and some of our retailers reporting their best trading periods ever. We have a great mix of 20 retailers in the areas of fashion, homewares and food which attracts shoppers from throughout the counties of Tipperary, Kilkenny and Waterford. The centre trades on one level and has plenty of free parking which all provides an enjoyable and convenient shopping experience for customers” says Julian Smith, Centre Manager.
2019 sees the 10th Birthday of Showgrounds and Julian announced an exciting programme of special events to celebrate throughout the year. “Kicking off with our Game of Thrones event in February we will have a series of celebratory events through to October. There will be everything from fashion shows to kids entertainment – something for all the family. We are very proud to have overcome a very challenging period for retail when we first opened and to have proceeded to develop one of the most successful shopping centres in the South East” added Julian.

Have you ever dreamed of being a King, Queen or Khaleesi?
Do you love the worldwide Book & TV hit Game of Thrones, where you win or you die?
Unlike Ned Stark, there is no need to lose your head to achieve your dream of sitting on the iconic Iron Throne of the Kingdom of Westeros, as it will be exclusively in Showgrounds Shopping Centre, Clonmel this coming Saturday February 23rd and Sunday 24th February 2019, open to the public to take their seat on the Iron Throne. Tickets available at event and online at ironthrone.ie from €10 include seated professional photos.
The ‘Iron Throne Experience’ is unlike anything you’ve ever seen before. Calling it “impressive” is an understatement. On the epic Game of Thrones TV show, the Iron Throne was constructed by Aegon I Targaryen, the first king of the Seven Kingdoms. He made it from the swords surrendered by his enemies. Legend has it, it’s made of a thousand swords that took 59 days to hammer out into a throne. Spikes and jagged edges in every direction make this one very intimidating lounge. Iron Throne Experience’s HBO licensed Game of Thrones prop replica measures over 7’2” in height, 5'11" in depth and 5'5" in width. Also on display are the HBO Game of Thrones Crown of Joffrey Baratheon, and swords Ice, Longclaw, Needle, Oathkeeper and Widow’s Wail, and Dragon eggs prop replicas.
“In Game of Thrones many people die in the battle to rule Westeros from the Iron Throne, but the people of Munster don’t need to lose their heads to sit on the Iron Throne. They can come along to the Showgrounds Shopping Centre, Clonmel from February 23rd to 24th” says Centre Manager Julian Smith.
Be the envy of all your friends, take your seat on the Iron Throne only at the Showgrounds Shopping Centre, Clonmel. Open February 23rd Saturday 10am to 6pm, and 24th Sunday 12pm to 6pm. Tickets available from €10 at event and online at ironthrone.ie
